Rhythm & Melody

I am a big proponent of accessible drum and bass, but on this mix CD you won’t hear any attempt to push drum and bass up from the under- ground. Staying true to purist hard-edged “tech step” styles, there’s not a lot of fluff. From the dark, moody opener, to the tough beats of Squarepusher and Aphex Twin , to the intelligent closers, this is jungle at its best. Hard and gritty breakbeats mixed with flawless precision.
The four elements of music – melody, harmony, rhythm, and dynamics. Rhythm (from Greek ῥυθμός – rhuthmos, “any measured flow or movement, symmetry”) is the variation of the length and accentuation of a series of sounds or other events. A musician’s role is to perceive and measure time. We consciously feel, shape, divide, and compose time to convey feeling. In recent years, music theorists have attempted to explain connections between rhythm, meter, and the broad structure and organization of sound events in music. Some have suggested that rhythm (and its essential relationship to the temporal aspect of sound) may in fact be the most fundamental aspect of music.
In music, a melody (from Greek μελῳδία – melōidía, “singing, chanting”), also tune, voice, or line, is a series of linear events or a succession, not a simultaneity as in a chord (see harmony). However, this succession must contain change of some kind and be perceived as a single entity (possibly Gestalt) to be called a melody. Most specifically this includes patterns of changing pitches and durations, while most generally it includes any interacting patterns of changing events or quality. “Melody is said to result where there are interacting patterns of changing events occurring in time.”
